Americans Are Stupid

A community center is not a mosque. Yet liberals have allowed the Tea Baggers and the rest of the xenophobes on the right to frame the discussion around a "mosque at Ground Zero." As Keith Olbermann stated, it's not a mosque and it's not at Ground Zero. But Keith is the only person of note saying so.

If the (absolute) least common denominator gets to set the frame how is it possible to have an intelligent conversation?

Charles -- hadn't checked in for a while since hadn't seen you were again providing insight (nor had I been logging in for a while) -- as to the Muslim Community Center -- not much point in arguing the facts -- the significant fact is it's an issue that clicked in the REAL situation, which is/was whipping up a mob that could be turned against the Right Wing's nightmare people -- The Mommy (Nancy Pelosi), the Black Guy who DARES to degrade the Oval Office where sat Monkey Boy (who had a right to be there since his poppa bought him the seat), and the gay man and the Jew... Barny Frank and Chuck Shumer -- THEY DON'T CARE about the facts, only about the Terror.
I like to think about what archetypal role someone is playing and I look at Newt (NO MOSQUES DISGRACING GROUND ZERO) Gingrich, now risen from the political grave and capitalizing on the Zombie Popularity and what I see is the small town guy who owns the Used Car Dealership, and stands in the back of the angry mob -- not yet ready to lynch -- and pretends HE'S in charge by shouting: "You know, he winked at a white woman and then licked his lips."
And I hope -- and really believe -- that perhaps Prez Obama (and others) are thinking of Napoleon's adage: "Never interrupt your enemy when he's making a mistake."
In this case -- we can already see the Repugnants and the Tea Partiers at each other's throats, cannibalizing each other in the name of ideological purity. ("Poor old Marat, in you we trust...") I'm sure Robespierre never imagined he'd soon ride the tumbrel to Dr. Guillotine's invention.
Nor did Mitch McConnell imagine his double-faced hypocrisy (telling Bush to pull out of Iraq to win the 2006 election while denouncing the Dems for saying we should reduce troop levels there) would be denounced in his hometown newspapers...
I think the right thing is to step back, don't get caught up in something that is totally insane and use Herman Hesse's advice: "When dealing with the insane, the best method is to pretend to be sane."
---glad to see you're back sharing thoughts with the rest of us.
